The University of Iowa men and women’s track and field team combined to provisionally qualify three events for the NCAA Championships at the Jack Johnson Classic, Saturday. Seniors Diane Nukuri (9:24.25) and Meghan Armstrong (9:26.02) qualified in the 3,000 meter run, while junior John Hickey qualified in the shot put for the second week in a row, with a toss of 61-0.
The women’s team had ten top-three finishes including first place finishes by sophomore Rhonda-Kaye Trusty in the 60 meters (7.70) and senior Kineke Alexander in the 200 meters (24.88). Junior Renee White was second in the 60-meter hurdles by less then one-thousandth of a second, with a career best time of 8.66. Sophomore Caleigh Bacchus finished second in the long jump (17-11) and fourth in the high jump (5-5 ¼).
The men’s team posted 13 top-three finishes including five first place finishes. The top placers include sophomore Paul Chaney, Jr. in the 200 meters (22.09), freshman Chris Barton in the 400 meters (49.59), junior Matty Gorman in the long jump (23-3 ½), junior John Hickey in the shot put (61-0) and the 1,600 meter relay (3:17.82). Senior Max Milder turned in an impressive performance by finishing second in the 60-meters (6.98) and third in the 200 meters (22.33).
The Iowa men and women will both compete at the Meyo Classic in South Bend, IN on Feb. 8-9.
