IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Toledo 5-2 Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
The Hawkeyes started strong as they claimed the doubles point, taking all three matches. J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou dominated at No. 1 doubles as they defeated Jared Miller/Likitkumchorn 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Reinoud Haal and Greg Holm teamed up to defeat Clark/Burus, 8-6. Additionally, Christian Bierich and Austen Kauss continued their strong play defeating Jay Miller/Harika 8-2.
Iowa won four singles matches on the day. Bart van Monsjou continued his strong play at No. 1 singles as he dominated Jared Miller 6-1, 6-1. Reinoud Haal defeated Tyler Sonkin 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. In addition, Tommy McGeorge and Greg Holm were victorious. McGeorge rallied to defeat Nutthavit Likitkumchorn 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) and Holm defeated Jay Miller 6-4, 6-3.
Head Coach Steve Houghton was pleased with the results of the dual meet. “This is certainly Toledo’s strongest team in the last few years, which they have proven in the last few matches. We feel good about the victory although we will definitely need to play better in the upcoming matches.”
