VanDenend Provisionally Qualifies At Husky Classic

SEATTLE, WA — Hawkeye senior Micah VanDenend provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 5,000 meters in his first competition of the season Saturday at the Husky Classic in Seattle, WA. VanDenend placed 16th in the race with a time of 14:07.06.

Also competing at the Husky Classic were throwers John Hickey and Shane Maier, and distance runner Andy Napier. Hickey and Maier placed second and third in the shot put with respective throws of 58-3 and 57-1 1/2. Napier placed 25th in the 3,000 meters with a collegiate-best 8:15.70. That time is almost eight seconds faster than his previous best and ranks sixth in school history.

Several other Hawkeyes competed at the ISU Classic in Ames Saturday, crowning two event champions. Hawkeye junior Eric MacTaggart won the non-seeded section of 3,000 meters with a season-best 8:28.24 and Iowa Assistant Coach Joey Woody won the unseeded 400 meters in 49.42. Seven other Hawkeyes posted collegiate-best performances at the meet. Sophomore Dan Rolling led the group with a 6-11 leap in the high jump, which ranks seventh in school history.

Iowa’s next competition will be Friday at the co-ed Iowa Invitational in Iowa City. Events are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the University of Iowa Recreation Building. Competing teams include Coe College, Iowa Central College, North Central College and Western Illinois University.
