CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO – No. 31 Iowa upset No. 23 Southeast Missouri State tonight, 194.550-193.650. The Hawkeyes improved their season best vault and beam scores to 48.8 and 48.725, respectively. Iowa’s best individual competitor was Katie Burke, finishing first in the all-around with a 38.925. The Hawkeyes saw many season and career-bests against the Redhawks.
Jenifer Simbhudas was Iowa’s highest vault scorer, earning a 9.825 to tie for second place with SEMO’s Brianna Gaddie. Katie Burke and Kara Pinjuv tied for fourth with a 9.75. Rounding out Iowa’s competitors on vault were Amanda Rudolph and Houry Gebeshian. Rudolph earned career-high 9.75 in the event to finish eighth, while Gebeshian tied her career and season-best 9.725 for a ninth-place finish.
Iowa, with a 48.45 on the bars, was led by Simbhudas who won the event with a 9.75. Gebeshian placed second improving her career-best to 9.725. Burke tied for fourth place with Ally Zipse, scoring 9.675.
The Hawkeyes, improving their total 2008 beam score to 48.725, were led by Pinjuv, who won the event with a 9.8. Freshman Rebecca Simbhudas, in her second showing as a Hawkeye, placed second in the event with a 9.775. Burke and Brandi Loffer tied for third with a 9.725.
On floor, Iowa earned a team total 48.575, earning two of the top three spots. Pinjuv scored a 9.8 for second place while Burke finished third with a 9.775. Loffer and Jenny Donar tied for sixth with a 9.725.
In the all-around Iowa claimed the top two spots. Burke placed first earning a 38.925 while Loffer finished second with a 38.750 which is a career-best. Simbhudas finished sixth in the all-around with a 38.55.
Iowa will return to action February 9th in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes will host Ohio State with competition starting at 7 p.m. The meet will be aired by the Big Ten Network.
