KALAMAZOO, MI – The No. 68 Iowa men’s tennis team defeated No. 65 Western Michigan on the road Saturday, 4-3.
Western Michigan claimed the doubles point, winning three close matches. The Hawkeyes then claimed four straight singles victories to defeat the Broncos. In No. 1 singles competition, No. 93 Bart van Monsjou defeated Kevin Hayward 6-2, 6-1. Fellow senior J.P. Ritchie defeated Alex Birchmeier 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. In addition, Christian Bierich and Tommy McGeorge also claimed victories. Bierich defeated Bryan Norville 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and McGeorge defeated Michale Calderone 6-4, 6-4.
Iowa (5-1 overall, 1-0 in Big Ten) will travel to No. 52 Drake Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Head Coach Steve Houghton was pleased with the outcome of the match. “It’s already our third win against a ranked team and our confidence continues to grow.”
