Iowa Offense Explodes Past Rutgers, 9-2

DeLand, FL — The Iowa baseball team took the second game of the double header against Rutgers Saturday evening, 9-2. The Hawkeyes out hit the Scarlet Knights 15-6 in the win and Michael Jacobs threw seven solid innings for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa (4-7) struck first in the top of the second; the inning featured a Wes Freie RBI-single to right. With a 1-0 lead, the Hawkeyes never looked back.

The Black and Gold added to it in the third, with a Justin Toole one-out double to right. Caleb Curry continued to swing the bat well and drove in Toole with a RBI-single to right.

Iowa’s offense exploded in the fourth. Kyle Riffel started the inning with a leadoff single to center. Freie continued with a single to left and advanced to Riffel to second. Trevor Willis grounded out to first and Riffel scored on the play. Matt Mossey kept things going with a two-out single to left to score Freie and advanced to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. Curry followed with a two RBI double to right center, to make it a 6-0 Iowa ballgame.

The Scarlet Knights (5-7) answered in the bottom of the fourth to score their only runs of the evening. The inning featured a Betteridge two-RBI single to center.

The Hawkeyes continued to score runs in the sixth. The inning started with a leadoff triple by Willis. Mossey hit an RBI fielder’s choice to score Willis and advanced to second on the play. Curry hit a two-out single to continue things for Iowa, and to advance Mossey to third. Mossey later scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-2.

Iowa added an insurance run in the ninth and Zach Kenyon held off the Scarlet Knights.

In the win, Curry continued to swing with bat well going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Toole continued his hitting streaking going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs. And three Hawkeyes (Muller, Riffel and Freie) went 2-for-5.

The Hawkeyes will take on the Scarlet Knights Sunday at Conrad Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (Eastern time)
