IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated DePaul Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center, 6-1. With the victory, No. 66 Iowa moves to 6-2 on the season.
The Hawkeyes started strong as they claimed the doubles point. J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou defeated Doerner/Graetz 8-4. Christian Bierich and Austen Kauss continued their strong play, defeating Hartman/Williams 8-4. Greg Holm and Walker Grimes fell in a close match to Moncada/Jozwiak, 8-7.
Iowa won five singles matches on the day. Bart van Monsjou continued his stellar play at No. 1 singles as he defeated Austin Doerner 6-1, 6-4. At the No. 2 position, Ritchie defeated Jose Moncada 6-4, 6-2. Bierich kept it going for the Hawkeyes, dominating Vanja Grgec 6-1, 6-1. He is now 7-1 in dual matches this spring. In addition, Reinoud Haal won over Alasdair Graetz, 6-2, 6-4. Tommy McGeorge defeated Bartosz Jozwiak 5-5, ret. Jozwiak could not continue after sustaining an injury early in the match. Patrick Dwyer saw his first dual match action, falling to Ben Hartman 6-4, 6-0.
“Today was a good win against a good DePaul team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We are coming closer and closer to getting a complete team performance. We will need to have a complete performance with No. 2 Ohio State coming in Friday.”
The Hawkeyes will return to action Friday, March 7, as they will host No. 2 Ohio State. Competition will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
