Hawkeyes Place Eighth

March 2, 2008

MADISON, WI — The University of Iowa men’s track and field team placed eighth at the 2008 Big Ten Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon in Madison, WI. The Hawkeyes scored 49 points at the two-day competition. Host Wisconsin won its sixth-straight Big Ten indoor team title, scoring 127.

The Hawkeyes were led by sophomores Adam Hairston, Dan Rolling, Paul Chaney, Jr., Zach Splan and Ray Varner in Sunday’s events. Hairston placed second in the 800 meters (1:53.80), while Rolling placed third in the high jump with a collegiate-best 6-11. Varner placed sixth in the 400 meters (48.52) and Chaney, Jr. placed eighth in the 60 (6.92) and 200 meters (22.07). Varner, Splan and freshmen Steven Willey and Chris Barton ran on the 1,600-meter relay that placed fourth in 3:15.12.

Iowa’s other Sunday point-scorers were seniors Ryan Niver (7th-heptathlon), Max Milder (7th-200 meters) and Jeremy Petsche (8th-high jump). Niver’s seven-event point total of 5,149 broke the school record of 4,984 he set in 2006.

The Hawkeyes crowned one event champion at the two-day competition. Junior John Hickey became Iowa’s fourth Big Ten indoor shot put champion Saturday, winning his second career conference title in that event with a throw of 61-9 3/4. Senior Shane Maier was runner-up in the shot with a season-best 59-8 1/2.

Hawkeye competitors will have one last opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which are set for March 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR. Iowa will send student-athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, IN, the Washington Qualifier in Seattle, WA, or the Last Chance Qualifier in Ames, IA, next weekend.
