UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The 46th-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to 51st-ranked Penn State Sunday, 6-1. With the loss the Hawkeyes are 9-6 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play.
Penn State won the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, seniors J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou faced another nationally-ranked doubles team, falling to No. 34 Brendan Lynch/Michael James 8-6. Ritchie and van Monsjou defeated No. 20 Maravic/Navas of Michigan, Friday. Walker Grimes and Reinoud Haal were defeated at No. 2 doubles in a tight match. Adam Slagter/Chris Sherman defeated Grimes/Haal, 9-8 (6).
Senior Bart van Monsjou continued his strong play, claiming the only singles victory for the Hawkeyes. van Monsjou defeated No. 52 Michael James 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, for his second victory over a nationally ranked player this weekend. Friday, van Monsjou overwhelmed No. 61 Matko Maravic of Michigan, 6-2, 6-2.
The Hawkeyes will return home to host Minnesota Saturday, April 5. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
