SPRINGFIELD, MO — The Iowa baseball team lost the second game of Sunday’s double header to Missouri State, 12-5 at Hammons Field. The Hawkeyes lost the first contest, 8-3.

For the Hawkeyes, Kevin Hoef continued to hit well, going 1-for-3 and scoring two Iowa runs. Freshman Trevor Willis swung the bat well for Iowa, going 2-for-3. Additionally, Justin Toole was 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Nick Erdman (1-1) started the game and got the loss for Iowa. The junior pitched two and one-third innings, allowing 10 runs, three of which were earned, on six hits. The Iowa bullpen featured five Hawkeyes, and in five and two-third innings they only allowed two runs on eight hits.

Iowa scored one in the first inning, to make it a 1-0 ball game. Hoef continued his hitting streak with a leadoff double to left and a Ryan Gryzwa sac bunt moved him to third. Toole got the RBI with a single through the right side, to put the Hawkeyes on the board.

Iowa continued to score in the second. Starting it off was T.J. Cataldo with a hit-by-pitch. He was advanced to second on a Ben Geelan groundout and moved to third on a single by Cody McManis. A Justin Brauer sac bunt scored Cataldo, making it a 2-1 ball game.

The Bears struck back in the bottom of the inning, making it a 2-1. But the Missouri State offense erupted in the third, scoring 10 runs and making it 11-2. The third inning featured a triple and homerun by Brayden Drake who had six RBIs in the inning.

The Black and Gold struck back in the sixth. Hoef started things for the Hawkeyes with a walk and Trevor Willis continued things with a double. Toole hit a two-RBI triple to right field, to make it an 11-5 game.

Iowa is scheduled to play three games against Rutgers, March 15-16, in Deland, FL. The first game is set for noon (CDT).
