EVANSTON, IL – The 53rd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team won its final road match of the season Sunday, defeating Northwestern, 6-1. The Hawkeyes are now 11-8 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play on the season.
Iowa was unable to win the doubles point as Northwestern took two of three matches. The senior duo of Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie continued their stellar play, defeating Marc Dwyer and Alex Sanborn, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Walker Grimes and Greg Holm fell to Peter Rispoli and David Seyferth 8-3. In addition, Christian Bierich and Reinoud Haal were defeated at the No. 3 position. The duo fell 9-8 (7-2) to Andrew McCarthy and Alexander Thams.
The Hawkeyes dominated the Wildcats in singles play, sweeping all six matches. Bart van Monsjou continued his excellent play, defeating Marc Dwyer at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3. The senior is now 26-8 this season in singles competition. Junior Christian Bierich returned to the No. 2 position, defeating Alex Sanborn 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. J.P. Ritchie beat Alexander Thams at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Reinoud Haal battled Peter Rispoli at the No. 4 position. Haal was victorious, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 1-0 (10-8). Tommy McGeorge and Greg Holm also claimed victories for Iowa. McGeorge defeated Andrew McCarthy 6-3, 6-3, and Holm beat David Seyferth 6-4, 6-4.
“It was a very good win against a team that has been very successful in the Big Ten the last few years,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes will return home to host 75th-ranked Purdue Saturday, April 19. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
