IOWA CITY, IA – The 52nd-ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated 70th-ranked Michigan State 5-2, Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. With the victory, the Hawkeyes are now 10-7 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play on the season.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point, taking two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, the 40th-ranked duo of seniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie continued their stellar play, defeating Gardner/Forger 8-3. Freshman Austen Kauss and sophomore Walker Grimes teamed up at No. 2 doubles. The pair fell 8-2 to Allare/Monich. Greg Holm and Patrick Dwyer competed at the No. 3 position, falling 8-5 to Sauerbrey/Rinks.
The Hawkeyes dominated the Spartans in singles play Sunday, winning five matches. Senior Bart van Monsjou, ranked 69th nationally in men’s singles, defeated Nick Rinks 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Junior Christian Bierich continued his strong play, dominating Alex Forger 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, senior J.P. Ritchie defeated John Allare 6-1, 6-2. Tommy McGeorge dominated Clark Richardson at No. 5 singles. McGeorge won 6-1, 6-0 in convincing fashion. In addition at No. 6 singles, Greg Holm defeated Tyler Sauerbrey 6-4, 6-4.
“We bounced back really well from a disappointing match yesterday,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
The Hawkeyes will compete next at 35th-ranked Wisconsin Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
