IOWA CITY – The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Iowa baseball team today, 16-3, at Duane Banks Field. The Boilermakers won three games over the Hawkeyes in this weekend’s four-game series.
Tyson Blaser went a perfect 3-for-3 today, collecting his first three-hit game and fourth multi-hit contest of the season for the Black and Gold. Caleb Curry went 1-for-3, with a home run and two RBI. Five different Hawkeyes had at least one hit in today’s loss.
“Today’s game got away from us on the mound,” said Head Coach Jack Dahm. “We made some strides in the first three games of the series. The season is a marathon and we have a ways to go. We need to stick together and find a way to get this right.”
Purdue (13-14, 6-2), a team that is in second place in the Big Ten standings, got the early lead in the top of the first scoring two runs on three hits off Hawkeye starter Nick Erdman. The Boilermakers plated their first run on a Ben Wolgamot RBI single to right field and a Drew Madia hit-by-pitch RBI with the bases loaded.
Iowa (8-17, 1-7) stranded two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first. Kyle Riffel and Justin Toole reached on a bunt single and a hit-by-pitch, respectively, but Curry and Kurtis Muller both struck out to end the Hawkeye scoring threat.
The Boilermakers broke the game open in the second inning, scoring six more runs on five hits. Purdue chased Erdman, who left the bases loaded for Hawkeye reliever George Rasiarmos. Rasiarmos, who made his first appearance of the season, allowed a first-pitch grand slam to Dan Black to left field to give the Boilermakers an 8-0 advantage.
Iowa got on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-out, two-run home run by Curry to left field. The home run was the third of his career and first of the season. The hit extended Curry’s hitting streak to six games, which equals his longest streak of the year. Curry also recorded his seventh multi-RBI game of the season, which ranks second on the team (Toole).
Purdue added another run in the third frame, two more in the fifth, one each in the sixth and seventh innings and three in the ninth. Six different Boilermakers recorded multiple hits today.
The Black and Gold scored one run in the bottom of the ninth. Wes Freie led off the frame with a double to left field. Kody McManis recorded his second RBI of the season with a single to left.
Iowa concluded its six-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts No. 10 Nebraska at 6 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. The contest will be the Hawkeyes’ first televised game on the Big Ten Network (HD).
