IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 15 American Friday, 4-1, at Grant Field. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 2-1 on the season. In addition, the win marks the 500th victory all-time for the program.
The first half was a defensive battle until the 18th minute. American took a 1-0 lead as Christine Fingerhuth hit Savannah Graybill for the first goal of the afternoon.
Moments later in the 40th minute, Iowa scored again pushing the score to 3-1. Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Caitlin McCurdy made a great pass to Katie Naughton and Naughton scored her second goal of the season.
The Hawkeyes added another goal in the 45th minute as senior Lindsey Duffy scored off a beautiful pass from Blaum. This made the score 4-1 as Iowa had scored four goals on their first four shots.
“I was really pleased with our scoring ability,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We made good changes coming out of halftime that led to better scoring opportunities. We really took advantage of our opportunities today.”
Iowa hosts No. 12 Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. at Grant Field. Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum will be going for her 100th win as head coach of the Hawkeyes.
