Clarksville, TN — The Iowa baseball team came out on top over Austin Peay at Raymond C. Hand Park, 15-9. The Hawkeyes got their offense going early in the second and never looked back. The Hawkeye win featured four Iowa homeruns and five Black and Gold stolen bases.
Austin Peay scored early in the first to take a 3-0 lead to start things off. The inning featured two Governor homers.
Iowa scored six runs in the second to take a 6-3 lead. Mike McQuillan got the Hawkeye’s going reaching base on a one-out error. Kody McManis kept things going, getting hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Trevor Willis took advantage of the base runners and hit his first career homer to put Iowa up 3-0. Kevin Hoef kept things alive with a double and Zach McCool hit his first colligate homerun to put Iowa on top 6-0.
The Governors came right back at the Black and Gold in the bottom of the third, plating two to make it 6-5.
The Hawkeyes broke open the game in the fifth, plating five runs to further their lead to 11-5. With two outs Willis hit a solo shot to center to record his second homerun of the game. Hoef kept things alive with a single and advanced to second a throwing error. McCool walked, followed by a Justin Toole walk to load the bases. Wes Freie picked up four RBI with a two-out grand slam, his second homer of the year.
Austin Peay kept at it in the sixth, plating two unearned runs to lessen Iowa’s lead to 11-7.
Iowa added an insurance run in the seventh for a 12-8 lead. With two outs Ryan Durant hit a double to center and advanced to third on a passed ball. T.J. Cataldo took advantage of the runner on third and hit him in with a single to center.
The Governors kept at it in the seventh, also scoring one for a 12-9 ballgame.
The Hawkeyes added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth, 15-7. Toole led Iowa off with a hit-by-pitch and one-out later stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Durant drew a walk to put runners on the corners and stole second. Cataldo drove in a run with a single through the right side, and then stole second. McQuillan hit a two-RBI single up the middle to put Iowa up 15-7.
In the Iowa win, Hoef snapped his offensive drought going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two doubles. Freie went 3-for-5 with a grand slam. Cataldo went 4-for-6 with three RBI and two stolen bases. Willis went 2-for-6 with two homeruns.
The Black and Gold bullpen threw well. Patrick Schatz, Kyle Heim, Steve Turnbull and Mike Schurz threw five and two-third innings allowing no earned runs and only one Governor hit.
Iowa will take on Austin Peay tomorrow; first pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CST).
