Senior Trio Garners All-Region Honors

Nov. 19, 2009

IOWA CITY, IA – – Three senior members of the University of Iowa field hockey team have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) West Region all-America team. Meghan Beamesderfer and Tricia Dean were named to the first team and Jess Werley to the second team.

Beamesderfer, a native of Lititz, PA, started every game of her Hawkeye career. She is now a four-time regional all-American and a three-time all-Big Ten honoree. As a sophomore, she was named third team all-American. In 2006, she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. This season, she led the team in goals scored (10) and defensive saves (four) and was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Dean, who hails from Bear, DE, started 83 of 84 career games. The midfielder is a two-time recipient of the NFHCA National Academic Award and is a two-time academic all-Big Ten honoree. In 2008, she was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic all-District team and was named to the Big Ten all-tournament team. This season, she led the Hawkeyes in points (28) and assists (10).

Werley, a native of Allentown, PA, started 82 of 84 career games. She finished fourth in team goals with seven and third on the team in points with 17. Werley has been a staple in the midfield for four years.

Iowa had six honorees in 2008. Forty Hawkeyes have now received regional all-America honors under Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum.

The two Hawkeyes named to the first team, along with first-team honorees from the other four regions, are now in the running for all-America recognition. The NFHCA all-America first, second and third teams will be announced Monday.
