Hawkeyes Finish Seventh At Boilermaker Invitational

April 25, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa men’s golf team wrapped up its regular season Sunday with a seventh place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational. With rainy conditions delaying play between rounds two and three, the Hawkeyes were able to post a 54-hole total of 892 (+28). Illinois won the 12-team invite with a 10-under par 854.

“We didn’t get out of our own way this weekend,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “It looked like we were still playing to the conditions from our last tournament. The fairways were softer and the greens were larger, and we just didn’t do a good job of adapting.”

Brad Hopfinger led the Hawkeyes with a 54-hole total of 220 (+4). The junior fired a final of round 1-over par 73 to finish tied for 11th place. Sophomore Chris Brant carded a third round of 76 (+4) and finished the tournament tied for 25th with a total score of 224 (+8). Sophomore Barrett Kelpin tied for 29th after posting a final round of 75 (+3), bringing his total to 225 (+9).

After firing two rounds at 1-over par 73, Vince India struggled with a final round of 80 (+8). The junior finished with a three-round total of 226 (+10), earning him a share of 36th place. Additionally, Ryan Marks finished in a tie for 39th. Competing in his third collegiate tournament, the freshman posted a final round at 5-over par 77, bringing his total to 227 (+11).

“We just didn’t have that killer instinct this week,” added Hankins. “We will be making some changes going forward.”

The Black and Gold will move into the post season when they travel to Independence, MN, for the 2010 Big Ten Championships. The three-day competition will be held at the prestigious Windsong Farm Golf Club.
