MAPLE PLAINS, MN – The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in second place after two rounds of play at the 2010 Big Ten Championships in Maple Plains, MN. With rounds of 288 (+4) and 286 (+2), the No. 41 Hawkeyes posted a total of six-over 574 through day one. Iowa is three strokes up on third place Purdue while No. 18 Illinois is leading the pack with a score of 562 (-6).
Barrett Kelpin led the Black and Gold once again with a two-round total of 138 (-4). The sophomore fired six holes under par on the day as he tied for second place.
“I’m going to try to keep shooting as low as I can; having a red number up there really helps the team score,” said Kelpin. “We have to keep our nose to the grindstone and chip away on each nine holes and hopefully be there when it comes to the back nine on Sunday.”
Juniors Brad Hopfinger and Vince India, along with sophomore Brad George, are all tied for 20th as the three each fired two rounds of two-over 73 today, bringing their 36-hole total to 146 (+4). Chris Brant is tied for 29th after firing a second round of even par 71. The sophomore posted a day one total of 147 (+5).
“We got off to a great start and put up a pretty good number in that first round,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “Obviously we would like to be closer to Illinois, but we are going to stick to our game plan. It’s not how you do after two or three rounds, it’s how you do after four rounds. Whoever continues to maintain their mentality, those are the teams that end up playing well down the stretch.”
Big Ten action will continue tomorrow from Windsong Farm Golf Club. The third round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. while the fourth and final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Sunday. Fans can follow live results at golfstatresults.com.
