IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming team hosted Truman State for the first regular season meet. The event was also the first official swim meet at the new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). The Hawkeyes claimed the first-place title with a score of 159-99.

Iowa’s 200 medley relay team of junior Danielle Carty, freshman Karolina Wartalowicz, senior Katarina Tour, and junior Daniela Cubelic kicked off the first regular season meet in the new CRWC with a win. The team earned first place with a time of 1:45.36, which was five seconds faster than Truman State’s second-place finish (1:51.76).

Cubelic posted two individual first-place finishes in the 100 back (56.02) and 50 free (24.08). Three freshmen swimmers claimed their first collegiate wins as a Hawkeye. Haley Gordon finished first in the 100 free (53.19) and 200 IM (2:11.90), while Karolina Wartalowicz won the 200 breast (2:21.97) and Taylor Newgaard in the 500 free (5:08.50).

With only two events left in the meet, Iowa led Truman State 139-84.

The relay team of Carty, freshman Elise Borja, senior Caitlin Carlyle and freshman Emily Christiansen ended the meet on a winning note. The team started off with the lead and extended the it each leg of the relay. The Hawkeyes recorded a time of 3:35.19.

“It was an awesome first meet,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “We were happy to see the newcomer’s race, but like we always say it’s a long season. We have a great Wisconsin team coming in next week. It will be the first meet the divers are competing in this season, so it will be great to see them compete.”

The Hawkeyes will begin conference meets next Friday when the team hosts Big Ten rival Wisconsin. The event will start at 5 p.m. in the CRWC.
