Fullerton, Calif. — The University of Iowa softball team dropped its DeMarini Invitational opener to No. 14/16 Stanford, 2-1, Friday afternoon at South Field on the campus of Cal State-Fullerton.

The Hawkeyes struck first with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Katie Keim led off the inning with a double to left centerfield before stealing third and crossing the plate on a Stanford throwing error.

The Cardinal answered immediately with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame. Teagan Gerhart got things started with a single up the middle. Following an Alix Van Zandt strikeout, Michelle Prong connected on a shot down the left field line that hit the foul pole for a home run to give Stanford the 2-1 lead.

Iowa had a pair of hits in the top of the sixth inning, one of which was a single by Chelsey Carmody to extend her hitting streak to 13 games, but Stephanie Ochoa lined out with two runners on to end the inning and the Hawkeye threat.

Kayla Massey was the tough luck loser in the contest, as the freshman allowed two runs on four hits in the return to her home state. Gerhart picked up the victory for Stanford — her seventh of the season — scattering four hits and striking out nine Iowa batters.

The Hawkeyes (7-6) return to action tonight at 8 p.m. (CT) against tournament host Cal State-Fullerton.
