Knoxville, Tenn. — The University of Iowa softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in a 7-3 loss at No. 11/11 Tennessee Thursday night at Lee Softball Stadium.
The Lady Volunteers jumped on Iowa starter Kayla Massey early in the game, plating three runs in the first inning and all seven runs in the first four frames. Jessica Spigner delivered the big hit in the first inning with a two-run double into the left centerfield gap.
After Tennessee pushed its fourth run across the plate in the bottom of the third, Iowa got a score back in the top of the fourth. Senior Stephanie Ochoa led off the inning with a single up the middle. After moving to second on a Nikki Gentile walk and third on an Ashley Akers single, Ochoa scored Iowa’s first run on Katie Keim’s RBI single through the right side.
The Lady Vols answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame, two of which came on Spigner’s second RBI double to right center.
The Hawkeyes plated their second and third runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Liz Watkins drew a two-out walk in the fifth before moving into scoring position on Ochoa’s double to left center. Watkins then scored on a passed ball, making the score 7-2.
Iowa’s final run came in the top of the sixth inning when senior Jenny Schuelke connected on a home run to left field to open the frame. The solo home run was Schuelke’s third long ball of the season.
Massey suffered the defeat in the game, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Ivy Renfroe picked up the victory for Tennessee, tossing five innings of eight hit ball with five strikeouts.
Ochoa paced the Hawkeyes at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4, which were a career-high. Keim collected a pair of hits in three at-bats out of the leadoff position, and senior Chelsey Carmody went 1-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to 25 games.
Iowa (14-11) faces Tennessee again on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).
