IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa baseball team defeated Indiana Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field, 2-1, in game one of a doubleheader.
Matt Dermody pitched the second complete game in as many games for the Hawkeyes. The sophomore won his fourth-straight start, giving up one run on eight hits in his first complete game. The Norwalk, Iowa, native struck out three Hoosiers.
The Black and Gold recorded seven hits. Mike McQuillan led the Hawkeyes with his team-leading 14th multi-hit game. The junior went 2-for-4.
Iowa (13-19, 3-5) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Willis launched his Big Ten-leading sixth triple to right center to open the frame. Zach McCool hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Willis from third and give the Hawkeyes the early advantage.
The home team added to its lead in the sixth. Iowa used three hits, including a Phil Keppler two-out RBI single, to extend its lead to 2-0.
Indiana (22-12, 5-3) got on the board in the top of the seventh, trimming Iowa’s lead to 2-1. T.C. Knipp led off the frame with a double down the left field line. With two down, he scored on an infield single to cut the Hawkeye lead in half.
Dermody silenced the Hoosiers in the eighth and ninth innings, giving Iowa the conference win.
Chad Martin took the loss for Indiana. The junior allowed two runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings.
Iowa and Indiana will conclude their three-game series with game two of their doubleheader today at 3 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. Admission is $3 for adults, and free for UI students and youths.
