Hawkeyes Claim 4 Titles at Gopher Invitational

Final Results

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team concluded play at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday. Senior Sonja Molnar and freshman Ellen Silver won their bracket championship, while sophomore Christina Harazin claimed the consolation championship in the McNabb Singles Flight. Molnar also claimed a doubles title, as she teamed with freshman Shelby Talcott to win the Koivu Doubles Flight Championship. The Hawkeyes posted a 24-5 singles record and a 10-5 doubles record over the three-day event.

Molnar earned the Mauer Singles Flight championship by defeating Wisconsin’s Nicky Stracar, 6-1, 6-2. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, recorded a 4-0 mark at the Gopher Invitational. Silver also posted a 4-0 record en route to a championship. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native won the McNabb Singles Flight, defeating Julia Courter of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-0, in the championship.

Harazin claimed the consolation championships in the McNabb Singles Flight by topping Marie Chartier of Iowa State, 7-5 (5), 1-0 (10-8). Freshman Katie Zordani also competed in the McNabb Singles Flight. She took third after beating Wisconsin’s Sarah Loebel, 6-4, 6-3.

Freshman Morven McCulloch enjoyed an impressive collegiate debut, posting a 3-0 record at the event.

In doubles, Molnar and Talcott won the Koivu Doubles Flight with an 8-4 victory over Trgovich/Stracar of Wisconsin. The duo went 4-0 at the Gopher Invitational. Harazin and Zordani also won a doubles decision, as they defeated Soule/Colarossi of UW-Milwaukee, 8-6.

The Hawkeyes return to the court Sept. 30-Oct. 2 when they compete in the Wildcat Invitational hosted in Evanston, Ill.
