UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 11th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team lost to top-seeded and seventh-ranked Michigan, 4-1, Friday in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The Wolverines scored three second-half goals to advance to the tournament title game. The loss end Iowa’s seven-game win streak.

The match was held at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex on the campus of Penn State and was shown live by BTN.

“We were in the game for the first 50 minutes,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We had a defensive breakdown that allowed Michigan to score the second goal. That shifted momentum, and we were unable to respond.”

Michigan (14-5, 5-1) struck first with a goal at the 8:57 mark. Rachael Mack scored off a penalty corner to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Iowa, the No. 4 seed, answered with a goal moments later. At the 11:30 mark, sophomore Aubrey Coleman found sophomore Kim Scraper who scored to tie the score at 1-1.

A Scraper shot passed the Michigan goalkeeper again late in the first period, but the goal was waved off. The score was tied at the half, 1-1.

Teams traded possessions in the second half, before Mallory Albini scored the go-ahead goal for the Wolverines at the 54:42 mark. Leading 2-1, the Wolverines extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal at the 59:48 mark, and they added a late score to make the final score 4-1.

Iowa (15-4, 4-2), will await word on the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be announced Tuesday evening. Check hawkeyesports.com for full coverage.
