IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving set one school record and won three events, including the three-meter springboard at the second day of the Hawkeye Invitational inside the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool. The Hawkeyes are currently in second place with 433 points after the second day of competition.
The second day of competition started off with the 200 medley relay. Iowa’s squad of Danielle Carty, Wartalowicz, Abbey Tuchscherer and Heather Arseth claimed a second place finish with a time of 1:41.41. The squad’s time ranks second overall in school history.
Becky Stoughton collected two more wins and a school record to her season-long unbeaten streak. The Peoria, Ill., native touched the wall first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.01, breaking her previous school record of 4:17.60. Two events later, she won the 200 free with a time of 1:48.81.
Following the 200 free, Wartalowicz and Hannah Maher represented the Hawkeyes in the `A’ final of the 100 breast. Wartalowicz earned herself a collegiate best time of 1:04.02 to place fifth. Maher touched the wall behind Wartalowicz in sixth place (1:04.07).
Ontario, Canada native, Carty recorded a personal best time with her performance in the 100 back. She swam a time of 55.05, which ranks third overall on Iowa’s top-performers list. Haley Gordon and Elaine Boosalis earned points in the 400 IM, placing sixth (4:23.61) and seventh (4:25.79), respectively.
Diver Veronica Rydze recorded her second first place finish at the invitational on the boards. She took the top-spot Friday night on the one-meter springboard and returned Saturday to win the three-meter (345.90). Joelle Christy also scored for the Hawkeyes on the three-meter with an eighth place finish (270.15).
Iowa capped the second day of competition with a third place finish in the 800 free relay. The quartet of Emily Hovren, Stoughton, Cubelic and Maher swam the relay in a time of 7:29.89.
The Hawkeyes return to the pool tomorrow (Sunday, Dec. 3) for day three of competition. Action commences at 10 a.m. with prelims, followed by the finals at 4 p.m.
