AMES, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team won 11-of-16 events and set three pool records Friday night inside the Beyer Hall Pool to top in-state rival Iowa State, 176-124, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

“I’m proud of how well the Hawkeye swimmers and divers performed tonight,” said head coach Marc Long. “It was an exciting win in a very tough environment.”

Three Hawkeyes left their mark at the Beyer Hall Pool after setting pool records. Abbey Tuchscherer set the first record of the night with her swim in the 200 fly. She swam a collegiate best time of 2:01.17, which beat the previous school record of 2:01.31 that was set in 1990. Tuchscherer’s time also ranks second overall on Iowa’s all-time top performers list.

Later in the competition, Tuchscherer earned her second individual win of the night after her swim in the 100 fly. She swam a collegiate best time of 54.77, which ranks second overall in school history. Haley Gordon and Audrey Kumm finished second and third in the event with times of 56.07 and 56.28, respectively.

Veteran diver Veronica Rydze posted a pool record with her win on the one-meter springboard. Rydze complied a collegiate best score of 312.30, which ranks fifth in school history. Her score broke the previous record that was set in 1985 (309.30). Rydze went on to also claim the victory on the one-meter springboard (309.30).

The Hawkeyes third pool record came in the 200 IM when Becky Stoughton touched the wall first in a time of 2:03.70. Stoughton’s time beat the previous record, which was set my former Iowa swimmer Katarina Tour (2:03.74) in 2009. Stoughton also won the 1,000 (10:07.31) and 500 (4:55.64) free.

Emily Hovren record two individual first place finishes in the 200 free (1:51.30) and 100 free (51.38). Her time of 1:51.30 in the 200 free marks a collegiate best time. Daniela Cubelic collected an individual first place in the 100 back (55.96).

Iowa capped off the meet with another Hawkeye victory, this time in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Hovren, Heather Arseth, Danielle Carty and Cubelic posted a time of 3:25.00 to seal the victory against the in-state rival.

The Hawkeyes return to action Jan. 6 when they take on Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon State during their winter training trip in Tucson, Ariz. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. (CT).
