IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team hosted Illinois inside the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool Saturday morning. The Hawkeyes won 15 of 16 events and defeated the Fighting Illini 195.5-102.5.

The Hawkeyes kicked of Saturday’s meet with first and second place finishes in the 200 medley relay. Iowa’s top squad consisting of Danielle Carty, Karolina Wartalowicz, Abbey Tuchscherer and Heather Arseth, touched the wall first with a time of 1:44.12. Iowa’s `B’ relay finished in second at 1:45.68.

Becky Stoughton (10:08.76), Hillary Weigand (10:24.79) and Taylor Newgaard (10:25.40) finished first, second and third, respectively in the 1,000 free.

In the next event, sophomore Emily Hovren won the 200 free with a time of 1:51.68. Emily Christiansen came in third in the event (1:54.05). Later on in the competition, Hovren collected her second individual first place finish of the meet with her time of 51.76 in the 100 free.

Daniela Cubelic and Illinois’ fastest swimmer were neck-in-neck throughout the 100 back. Cubelic sped up the last 10 yards to post a first place finish with a time of 56.42.

Wartalowicz recorded first place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast. Her first victory came in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.13. Later on she won the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:20.87.

Stoughton, this week’s Big Ten Freshman Swimmer of the Week, recorded her second individual first place finish with her race in the 500 free. She won the event with a time of 4:57.32. Christiansen placed second in the event with a time of 5:04.89. Stoughton won her third individual event of the meet, winning the 200 IM (2:04.42).

Oshkosh, Wis., native Abbey Tuchscherer posted individual first place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly. She won the 100 fly with a time of 56.76 and 200 fly with a time of 2:04.46. Following the 200 fly, Arseth won the 50 free with a time of 23.87.

The Hawkeye divers took the top three spots on the one-meter and three-meter springboards. Veronica Rydze won the one-meter (310.80) and three-meter (342.45). Joelle Christy placed second on the one-meter (283.36), while Abby Grilli placed second on the three-meter (307.80). Lauren Kelba took third on both boards with scores of 270.23 and 286.95, respectively.

The Hawkeyes concluded Saturday’s meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. The squad of Dani Klunk, Cubelic, Hovren and Arseth took the top spot with a time of 3:28.02.

Iowa returns to action Jan. 21 when it travels to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern and Harvard. The meet is set to start at 11 a.m.
