Bradenton, Fla. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished the final day of the 2012 Big Ten Match-Play Championships with a win over No. 31 Indiana. The 30th-ranked Hawkeyes defeated the Hoosiers based on criteria after a 3-3 tie. Action was held at the par 72, 7,474-yard Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, Fla.
Senior Barrett Kelpin led the Hawkeyes with a 2-0 mark on the weekend. Competing from the number one position, Kelpin posted a 2 up decision over Indiana’s Chase Wright. Sophomore Steven Ihm earned a point for Iowa from the number two spot. He was able to top Indiana’s David Mills, 3&1. Iowa’s third point came from freshman Brian Bullington who recorded Iowa’s most dominate win of the tournament. Competing in the fifth position, Bullington topped Andrew Fogg, 4&3.
With the team score tied at three matches apiece, Iowa earned the decision based on tiebreaking criteria. The combined margin of victory for Iowa’s three matches was nine holes compared to Indiana’s seven.
The Hawkeyes will return to The Concession Golf Club for the Callaway Collegiate Match-Play March 18-20. Iowa will look to improve on its ninth place finish from 2011.
