STILLWATER, Okla. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to Oklahoma State (4-1), 5-2, on Sunday at the DeBois Tennis Complex in Stillwater, Okla. The Hawkeyes are 3-2 this season.
“The score doesn’t do justice to our performance today,'” said head coach Katie Dougherty. “We had match points at No. 2, a set point in the first at No. 5 and many sets that we were leading 4-3, 5-4 and couldn’t convert. We competed across the board in singles better than we did yesterday and the bottom line is that we’re headed in the right direction. Oklahoma State was a little tougher at key moments than we were and that was the difference.”
Oklahoma State swept the doubles point. Sophomore Christina Harazin and freshman Morven McCulloch lost for the first time duing the dual season at the No. 2 position. The pair fell to Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah, 8-3. Harazin and McCulloch dropped to 3-1 in dual play.
In singles, senior Sonja Molnar remained unbeaten in dual play. The Guelph, Ontario, native won a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (4) decision against C.C. Sardinha at the top spot. Molnar, ranked No. 109 by the ITA, improved to 5-0 during dual matches.
“Molnar played two sets on a sprained ankle and gutted that win out for us,” said Dougherty.
Freshman Ellen Silver earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Isabela Miro at the No. 6 position for the Hawkeyes. Silver moved to 2-3 in dual play with the win.
Iowa returns home to host Northern Iowa on Feb. 25. Play will begin at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex at noon (CT). Admission is free.
