KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by Western Michigan on Sunday at the West Hills Athletic Club. Western Michigan (7-4 overall) beat Iowa (1-6) by a 5-2 margin.
Junior Garret Dunn won his fifth straight singles match with a win at the No. 4 singles position. Dunn defeated Zeyad Montasser 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to improve his singles record to 5-1. Four of Dunn’s victories this season came in straight sets.
Sophomore Jonas Dierckx won in No. 2 singles against Western Michigan’s Simon Blomberg, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7). Dierckx has a 4-3 record this season competing in No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Senior Will Vasos and sophomore Chase Tomlins won in No. 3 singles to give the Hawkeyes an early advantage. Vasos and Tomlins defeated the Bronco’s Pablo Olivarez and Simon Blomberg 8-4. Western Michigan then rallied to win No. 2 and No. 1 doubles by a 9-8 score to take the doubles point. Vasos and Tomlins are 2-0 this season.
Iowa will hit the courts next on Feb. 29th against in-state rival Drake. The match will begin at 6 p.m. (CT) inside the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
