MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision at Coastal Carolina Friday. The game was played at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as part of the 13th Annual Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach Tournament.

The Chanticleers (2-2) struck first with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Sloan Gilliam doubled to left to lead off the frame. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on an RBI groundout.

Junior catcher Dan Sheppard nearly gave the Hawkeyes the lead in the top of the sixth. With Taylor Zeutenhorst on first, following a single up the middle, Sheppard flew out to the warning track in left field to end the top half of the inning.

Iowa (1-3) put runners at first and second to lead off the seventh, but was unable to push across a run.

In the eighth, with freshman Eric Toole on second and one away, senior Mike McQuillan nearly missed a double down the left field line that would have tied the game. The Black and Gold ultimately stranded runners on second and third to end the frame.

Jarred Hippen started and took the tough luck loss. The senior pitched seven and a third, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out five. Senior Tim Fangman saw action out of the Iowa bullpen.

Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Herb recorded the win. The sophomore earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out four. Ryan Connolly pitched the final one and a third to earn the save for the Chanticleers.

Iowa returns to action tomorrow morning when it plays George Mason. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. (CT) at Charles Watson Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.
