Hawkeyes Fall to George Mason in Myrtle Beach

CONWAY, S.C. — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped a 12-3 decision against George Mason Saturday. The game was played at Charles Watson Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University as part of the 13th Annual Caravelle Resort Baseball at the Beach Tournament.

The Hawkeyes (1-4) struck first in the bottom of the second. With two away, senior Sean Flanagan launched a solo home run to deep left center to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. Freshmen Ryan Rumpf and Jake Yacinich followed with back-to-back singles. Rumpf later scored from second on a Patriot error, giving Iowa an early 2-0 advantage.

The Patriots (2-3) answered in the next inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. George Mason pushed across five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.

Rumpf tallied an RBI single to right center in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Taylor Zeutenhorst, to make the score 9-3.

The Patriots tallied three runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 12-3.

Matt Dermody started and took the loss. The junior pitched three and a third, allowing seven runs on eight hits. He struck out two. Three Hawkeye newcomers, junior Andrew Hanse, and freshmen Nick Hibbing and Andrew Hedrick each made their first appearances out of the bullpen. Hanse led the way with three scoreless innings. He struck out four Patriots.

George Mason’s Ryan Pfaeffle recorded the win. The junior earned the win, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four.

Iowa concludes action in the Coastal Carolina Tournament tomorrow morning when it plays Virginia Tech at Charles Watson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. (CT).
