Seniors End Dual Meet Careers

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team hosted Western Illinois Friday night for the final dual meet of the season at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes honored three seniors at the event as they ended their dual meet careers as Hawkeyes. Iowa crushed Western Illinois 133-60.

“We have an outstanding senior class and they have been outstanding for this program,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “It’s nice to recognize them at their last dual meet as a Hawkeye. We have the Big Ten’s coming up and the senior class will be a big impact at the meet.”

Seniors Danielle Carty and Daniela Cubelic teamed up with teammates Hannah Maher and Lauren Drennan for the 400-medley relay. The squad won the event in a time of 3:53.44.

The Hawkeyes dominated the 200 free, finishing one, two, three and four. Maher won the event in a time of 1:55.23. Emily Christiansen came in second with a time of 1:56.59, while Hillary Weigand finished third (1:57.58) and Karolina Wartalowicz placed fourth (1:59.15).

Cubelic and Carty each collected individual wins. Cubelic posted a winning time of 23.65 in the 50 free and Carty won the 50 back in a time of 25.75.

Abbey Tuchscherer touched the wall first in the 100 free to win the event in a time of 53.27. Following the 100 free, Aiste Dobrovolskaite earned a first place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.79. Wartalowicz won the last individual event of the night with a time of 30.18 in the 50 breast.

Senior diver Veronica Rydze ended her last dual as a senior with two first place finishes. Her first win came in the one-meter springboard with a score of 325.28. She went on to win the three-meter springboard with a score of 343.50.

The Hawkeyes concluded the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay. Carty, Cubelic, Eytails and Allen posted a time of 1:37.91 to win the event.

Iowa returns to action on Feb. 15-18 at Campus Recreation and Wellness Center for the 2012 Women’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships.
