Bradenton, Fla. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team will compete for the consolation championship at the 2012 Callaway Collegiate Match-Play Championship after a semifinal win against 13th-seeded Colorado State. Iowa topped the Rams, 3-2 on its way to the consolation finals. Top-seeded Arkansas will face third-seeded and defending champion Duke in the tournament finals. Action is being held on The Concession Golf Course, a par 72, 7,474-yard layout in Bradenton, Fla.
The Hawkeyes defeated Colorado State with wins from their top three positions. From the number one spot, senior Barrett Kelpin earned a point with a 1 UP decision over CSU’s Zahkai Brown. Sophomore Steven Ihm topped Kirby Pettitt, 1 UP, as senior Chris Brant defeated Cameron Harrell, 2 UP.
Freshmen Ian Vandersee and Brian Bullington each dropped their matches, 2&1, from the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Vandersee fell to CSU’s Mike Wuertz as Bullington lost to Parker Edens.
The Hawkeyes will take on seventh-seeded Liberty for the consolation championship beginning Tuesday morning. Final round matches will begin at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
