Iowa Finishes 2nd at LSU Invitational

April 1, 2012

BATON ROUGE, La. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team finished second at the LSU Invitational Sunday afternoon. With a final round of one-under 287, the 34th-ranked Hawkeyes posted a team mark of nine-under 855, two strokes behind host school and 24th-ranked Louisiana State (853, -11). Three Hawkeye golfers finished inside the top-10 individually as Iowa topped the three other Big Ten schools in the field plus Iowa State. Action was held at LSU’s University Club, a 7,274-yard par 72 course in Baton Rouge, La.

“The guys showed patience and trust all weekend,” said Head Coach Mark Hankins. “LSU shot a great round to beat us in the end, but I’m proud of our play and putting up another good score.”

Sophomore Steven Ihm posted a final round of even par 72 to finish fifth individually. The former Dubuque Wahlert prep was three-under through 13 holes, before slipping on holes 15 and 16, bringing him back to even par on the day. Ihm recorded a tournament total of three-under 213.

Senior Barrett Kelpin and freshman Ian Vandersee finished in a tie for seventh place. Both student-athletes tallied a three-round mark of one-under 215. After back-to-back rounds of one-under 71, Kelpin turned in a final round of 73 (+1). Vandersee scored a third round total of 76 (+4).

Senior Chris Brant fired an 18-hole total of even par 72. The Edwardsville, Ill., native finished 13th with a three-round score of 218 (+2). Freshman Joseph Winslow climbed 19 spots up the leaderboard with a final round of two-under 70, Iowa’s best individual mark of the day. With a 54-hole total of 224 (+8), Winslow finished in a tie for 26th.

“All five guys were in the mix again today,” said Hankins. “We didn’t let a fog delay disrupt our preparation and came out and shot another solid team score of one under par. Joseph played one shot at a time today and kept making birdies even when he was under par. His round was key to today’s success.”

Iowa will return home to host the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational April 14-15. The 54-hole event will be held on Iowa’s Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
