IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Bradley on Wednesday night at Duane Banks Field, 7-3, in the first of a four-game homestand. The loss marked Iowa’s first in its last five outings against nonconference foes and its first home loss since March 28 (3-1, Nebraska-Omaha).
“We need to have a much better approach,” said head coach Jack Dahm. “I was concerned about having some time off and having a lackluster performance, and that is exactly what happened. We put some pressure on them but we got ourselves out. We have to compete better, and if we do that, we have a tremendous opportunity ahead of us.”
Tonight was only Iowa’s second game in eight days. The Hawkeyes had one of its contests cancelled over the weekend due to inclement weather.
The Iowa offense was led by senior Mike McQuillan and freshman Jake Yacinich. McQuillan went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, recording his team-leading 12th multi-hit game and fourth multiple-RBI contest. Yacinich also finished 2-for-5, tallying is 10th multi-hit game.
Bradley (19-14-1) struck first in the opening frame. Greg Partyka sent a two-out, two-run home run over the fence in right to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
Partyka and the Braves struck again with two outs in the top of the third. The sophomore designated hitter notched his second long ball of the game, this time a three-run shot to right center to give Bradley a 5-0 advantage.
Iowa (15-17, 4-5) answered with two, two-out runs of its own in the bottom half of the third. McQuillan doubled home Sean Flanagan, who reached on a two-out double. Yacinich singled home McQuillan to cut the score to 5-2.
After four scoreless innings, Bradley increased its lead to five runs, plating two runs to make the score, 7-2. Max Murphy opened the frame with a home run and the Braves later added a two-out run. Six of the Braves’ seven runs came with two outs and six via the long ball.
The Hawkeyes added a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by McQuillan, making the final score 7-3.
Andrew Hedrick started for Iowa and recorded his first career loss (2-1). The freshman pitched two innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He struck out one. Andrew Hanse, Tim Fangman, Taylor Kaufman and Nick Brown saw action out of the Iowa bullpen.
Tory Doerr earned the win for Bradley. He pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
The Hawkeyes and Braves will play again next week. Iowa will play at Bradley Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m.
Iowa returns to Big Ten action this weekend when it hosts Penn State for a three-game set at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions will open the series at 6:05 p.m. on Friday. The two teams will also play on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
