EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped a 6-0 decision to Michigan State Friday afternoon in the series opener at McLane Stadium.

Spartan starter Tony Bucciferro silenced the Hawkeye bats, throwing a complete game shutout, scattering five Hawkeye hits, to earn his fifth victory of the season.

Michigan State (32-16, 11-8) scored its first tally in the bottom of the first on an RBI single. The Spartans added a sacrifice fly in the third and a lead-off home run in the fourth off Hawkeye starter Matt Dermody to extend their advantage to 3-0. Michigan State tallied its final three runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the seventh.

Iowa had opportunities to score runs in the first, five and seventh innings, but Bucciferro was able to pitch his way out of jams. Senior Mike McQuillan led the game off with a double, but was thrown out at the plate on a groundball later in the first. The Hawkeyes left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded runners on second and third in the seventh.

Dermody got the loss for the visitors, allowing five runs (four earned), while striking out five, in six and a third innings. Freshman Taylor Kaufman and senior Tim Fangman also saw action out of the bullpen for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa (19-25, 7-12) was led offensively by rookie centerfielder Eric Toole, who went 2-for-4.

The Hawkeyes and Spartans continue their weekend set tomorrow. Fitch pitch is slated for 12:05 p.m. (CT) at McLane Stadium.
