IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Annemie Smith will compete for South Africa at the CAA Africa Senior Championships in Porto Novo, Benin. The George, South Africa, native will compete in the hammer throw at the 2012 Olympic qualifying event. Competition begins June 27 and concludes July 1.
Smith owned Iowa’s top mark in the hammer throw this season. She recorded a career best 187-7 (57.19m) at the Messersmith Invitational, a mark that ranks second in school history. The CAA Africa Senior Championships marks her third international appearance, she competed at the World Youth Championships in 2010 and placed 13th at the World Junior Championships in 2011.
