OMAHA, Neb. — The University of Iowa baseball team split its two-game weekend series at Creighton. The Hawkeyes dropped the opener Saturday, 9-2, before posting a 6-3 victory Sunday to earn the split.

In Sunday’s finale, the four Iowa pitchers — Matt Dermody, Andrew Hanse, Sasha Kuebel and Nick Hibbing — limited the Bluejays to three hits. Hanse and Kuebel both threw three scoreless innings, and Hanse had seven strikeouts.

After Creighton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Hawkeyes took the lead for good in the third, courtesy of sophomore Eric Toole’s bases clearing three-run triple. Iowa then added two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Iowa had 10 hits in the victory with junior Taylor Zeutenhorst pacing the Hawkeyes, going 3-for-4 with three steals and three runs scored. Nick Day went 2-for-3 with a run, while Blake Hickman and Kris Goodman both went 1-for-3. Hickman had an RBI and two runs scored, while Goodman had a pair of RBIs.

Creighton won Saturday’s series opener by a 9-2 margin, pounding out 11 hits in the contest. Taylor Kaufman threw two innings, Ricky Sandquist three innings and freshman Josh Martsching threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with one walk and one strikeout.

Toole, Kaufman, Goodman and Day each recorded a hit in the defeat. Toole went 1-for-2 with a run, Goodman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Day went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Zeutehhorst had an RBI.
