IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball Gold team claimed 2-of-3 games over the weekend against the Grey squad to win the best-of-three Grey-Gold World Series.
After winning the first contest, the Gold team secured the series win with a 5-4 victory in game two. Gold led 3-2 entering the final inning before Grey rallied for two runs in the top half. Gold answered, pushing across two runs in the final frame to secure the series victory.
Grey won the final game, 9-1. Freshman Micaela Whitney pitched for Grey, limiting Gold to one run on seven hits. She struck out one. Classmate Shayla Starkenburg took the loss for Gold, allowing nine runs on eight hits. She struck out eight.
Steviee Grove led the Grey offense, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and a walk. Junior Brianna Luna and senior Bradi Wall paced the Gold with two hits apiece. Luna notched a double and a run scored, and Wall recorded an RBI.
