IOWA CITY, Iowa — Junior Roy Devyn Marble’s season-high 22 point scoring output lifted the University of Iowa men’s basketball team to a 66-36 victory over Howard on Thursday night on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“Our pressure was good and our defensive effort and intensity was terrific,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery. “We didn’t shoot it well from 3 or shoot it well in the second half, but we still won by 30.”
Marble made 9-of-15 shot attempts and went 2-of-5 from 3-point range en route to his 22-point performance. Sophomore Aaron White also finished in double digits, netting 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. He made 10-of-11 free throw attempts.
Fourteen Iowa players saw action and nine scored.
“Marble is playing great,” said McCaffery. “He’s confident, has a diverse game and can score in a lot of ways. We’re a better team when he’s on the floor, and he’s very comfortable whether he has it, is off the ball or playing the three spot. It doesn’t matter.”

The Hawkeyes shot 44.9 percent from the floor, converting 22-of-49 field goal attempts. Iowa went 4-of-21 from 3-point land and made 18-of-25 free throws. The team also won the rebounding battle, 43-30, and doubled up the Bison in the paint, 32-16.
Defensively, Iowa limited Howard to 14-of-52 shooting (26.9 percent) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from long range and 5-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Bison had 13 turnovers, eight of which came in the first half.
The 36 points are the fewest Iowa has allowed since Dec. 5, 2008, when it downed Bryant, 61-36, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is also the low point total surrendered by a McCaffery-coached Iowa team.
Marble got the Hawkeyes off to a quick start, scoring 11 of the team’s first 13 points to give Iowa a 13-5 lead at the 13:33 mark. Iowa then used a full-court press to break the game open, using an 11-4 run to make the score 24-9 with 4:51 to play.
“I wanted to come in, play strong and be aggressive,” said Marble. “We came out and played good defense to hold this team to 36 points.”
Marble’s jumper at the 6:03 mark pushed the Hawkeye advantage to 19-7 before freshman Mike Gesell followed with a 3-pointer and freshman Adam Woodbury’s jumper made the score 24-9. Iowa scored the final six points of the half to push its advantage to 20 at 36-16.
After Mike Phillips opened the second half’s scoring, the Hawkeyes scored eight unanswered points to push the Iowa lead to 44-18. White scored the final six points of the spurt, four of which came on back-to-back fast break dunks.
Back-to-back Howard 3-pointers cut the Hawkeye lead to 44-26 at the 12:36 mark, but Iowa allowed just 10 points the remainder of the game to cruise to the 30-point victory.
Iowa (3-0) returns to action Saturday night, hosting Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. (CT) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“Gardner-Webb is a terrific program,” said McCaffery. They’ve got athletes, some experience, good guard play… we’ve got our hands full with them.”
