Hawkeyes Gear Up for Midwest Regional

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams head to the NCAA Midwest Regional this weekend. The event will be held Friday in Springfi eld, Mo, beginning at 12 p.m. (CT).

2012 NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL
The 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional will be hosted by Missouri State University. The top two teams and four individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA Championships. Additional teams and individuals will be chosen through an at-large selection process following the regional competition. The women’s 6K race is set to begin at 12 p.m. with the men’s 10K to follow at 1:15 p.m.

COMPETING FOR IOWA
Nick Holmes, Cameron Rieger, Jon Michael Brandt, Sam Chaney, Kevin Lewis, Ben Witt, Anthony Gregorio, Taylor Soltys, and Caleb Wilfong will represent the Hawkeye men, while Mareike Schrulle, Nicole Benson, Kelsey Hart, Lena Placzek, Megan Ranegar, Jocelyn Todd, Lisa Gordon, Courtney Martin, and Cindy Saliba will compete for the women.

2011 MIDWEST REGIONAL
Senior Nick Holmes received NCAA All-Region honors at the 2011 Midwest Regional. Holmes clocked a time of 31:41 for an 18th place fi nish.

IN THE RANKINGS
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA Regional rankings. The women’s team is ranked ninth in the Midwest Region, while the men are ranked 13th.

SCHRULLE IS ALL-BIG TEN
Graduate student Mareike Schrulle ran to a second place fi nish at the 2012 Big Ten Championships on Oct. 28. Schrulle recorded a 6,000-meter time of 20:17. Schrulle’s effort earned her fi rst team all-Big Ten accolades. Shrulle recorded her personal best 6,000-meter time of 19:57 at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Oct. 12.

SPORTSMANSHIP HONOREES
Iowa graduate student Mareike Schrulle and sophomore Ben Witt were both named 2011 Big Ten sportsmanship honorees. Athletes named to the list are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
