SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – University of Iowa graduate student Mareike Schrulle finished third at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday afternoon. The NCAA Midwest Regional was held in Springfield, Mo., on the campus of Missouri State University.

The Hawkeye women finished sixth out of 31 teams with a team score of 220. Schrulle crossed the 6,000-meter line in 20:09 to finish third overall and move on to the NCAA Championships. Megan Ranegar was also a top 20 finisher. The junior finished 15th posting a time of 21:07. Seniors Nicole Benson (42nd; 21:49) and Kelsey Hart (77th; 22:27), and freshmen Cindy Saliba (89th; 22:37), Lisa Gordon (99th; 22:45), and Courtney Martin (129th; 23:19) rounded out the Hawkeye line-up.

“This was a bounce back effort for the team as a whole,” said head women’s cross country coach Layne Anderson. “Mareike (Schrulle) continues to enjoy a historical season and Megan (Raneger) was able to race to her potential on a much improved Achilles tendon.”

The Hawkeye men finished 13th out of 29 teams with a team score of 392. Junior Jon Michael Brandt paced the Hawkeyes. Brandt crossed the 10,000-meter line in 31:57 to finish 62nd. Seniors Nick Holmes (73rd; 32:17) and Cameron Rieger (75th; 32:19), freshman Caleb Wilfong (87th; 32:36), sophomore Ben Witt (96th; 32:45), freshman Anthony Gregorio (102nd; 32:54), and junior Sam Chaney (150th; 34:00) rounded out the Hawkeye line-up.

“We are pretty disappointed with our performance today,” said head men’s cross country coach Larry Wieczorek. “I’m sure the guys did what they could, but it was certainly not the result we were looking for.”

Schrulle will return to action at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.
