53 Hawkeyes Named Fall Academic All-Big Ten

Dec. 6, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Fifty-three University of Iowa student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team. The list includes student-athletes from football (15), field hockey (12), women’s soccer (11), women’s cross country (6), women’s volleyball (6) and men’s cross country (3).

The UI field hockey program set a school record for the second straight season with its 12 selections; the team had 11 in 2011. The 11 women’s soccer and six volleyball selections are the most for each of those programs since 2009.

The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 816 fall sports athletes. The list includes 72 field hockey players, 259 football players, 58 men’s and 127 women’s cross country runners, 78 men’s and 147 women’s soccer student-athletes and 76 volleyball players.

Eighteen of these student-athletes have maintained unblemished GPAs. Two of those honorees are UI women’s cross country student-athletes Kelsey Hart and Mareike Schrulle. Hart, a West Branch, Iowa, native, is majoring in integrative physiology, while Schrulle, a native of Arnsburg, Germany, is a graduate student in leisure studies.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Following is the list of Iowa’s Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
