EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team posted a pair of victories at the Northwestern Invitational, downing Notre Dame (212.50-155.50) and Missouri State (246-122).
“Great weekend of racing,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “The athletes stepped up and competed well. We have more work ahead, but this was excellent preparation as we head into the Championship season.”
Freshman Roman Trussov collected a first place finished in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:00.60. Junior Andrew Marciniak also posted a top-three finish, placing third in 2:02.77.
Senior Byron Butler swam to the victory in the 100 fly (47.89). His time is an NCAA `B’ cut.
Freshman Addison Boschult posted a first-place finish in the 3-meter springboard, accumulating a point total of 326.90.
“I was very pleased with Addison today, ” said UI Head Diving Coach Todd Waikel. “He has been working hard and this is a big win for him. This will also be a great boost for his training the next couple of weeks.”
The Hawkeyes finished first in the 200 medley relay. Junior Dustin Rhoads, sophomore Korey Schneider, senior Byron Butler and senior Jordan Huff swam to the victory in 1:28.96. Huff finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.09.
Iowa finished first and second in the 100 back. Junior Dustin Rhoads touched in 48.45 to finish first. His time is a NCAA `B’ cut. Butler finished in second (48.66).
Iowa won the 800 free relay. Freshman Jackson Allen, Huff, freshman David Ernstsson, and sophomore Grant Betulius swam a time of 6:38.85 to win the event.
Junior Tyler Lentz swam to second place in the 400 IM in 4:00.86.
The Hawkeyes finished with three of the top four times in the 200 back. Butler touched in 1:47.56 to finish as the runner-up, while Rhoads was third (1:49.48) and freshman Andrew Parker fourth in 1:49.93. Butler also tallied a top-three finish in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:51.22 to place third.
Senior Jordan Huff and Ernstsson were among the top-five in the 100 free. Huff sprinted to the wall in third place in 45.44, while Ernstsson was fifth in 45.64.
Iowa closed out the dual meet with a runner-up showing in the 400 free relay. Sophomore Brian Donatelli, Huff, freshman Jackson Allen and Ernstsson touched the wall in 3:00.29.
The Hawkeyes return to action on Feb. 8 when they host Western Illinois in their Senior Night meet. Action is set to begin 6 p.m. (CT) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
