BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team swam to three school records on the third day of the Big Ten Championships.
Senior Byron Butler claimed a school record in the 100 butterfly during the morning preliminaries, swimming a time of 47.05 seconds. Butler downed Rafal Szukala’s 19-year old school record of 47.43 seconds, which was set in 1994. The Wisconsin native finished seventh in the event final, with a time of 47.14 seconds.
The Hawkeyes had a strong showing in the 100 breast “B” final, finishing 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and all posting NCAA `B’ qualifying times. Junior Andrew Marciniak clocked a school record time of 53.59 to finish 11th overall, while freshmen Mike Nelson swam to the wall in 53.91 to finish 12th in a time that ranks fourth in the record books.
Freshman Roman Trussov touched out in 53.96 to finish 13th overall, while sophomore Korey Schneider rounded out the quartet with a 14th place showing in 54.08, the fifth-best time in school history. Freshman Quillan Oak also swam an NCAA `B’ cut in the 100 breast “C” final (55.03), a time that ranks eighth in school history.
Sophomore Grant Betulius bettered his own school record in the 100 backstroke “A” final. Betulius touched in 46.70 to post a sixth-place finish. His time qualifies as an NCAA `B’ cut. Junior Dustin Rhoads and Butler swam times that rank second and third in the 100 back “B” final. Rhoads touched in 47.22 seconds to finish 10th, and Butler touched in 47.48 to place 11th. Both times mark NCAA `B’ qualifying times.
Junior Tyler Lentz posted an NCAA `B’ qualifying time in the 400 IM “B” final. The junior touched the wall in 3:49.01 to finish ninth in the event. His time is also a season best.
Freshman David Ernstsson and senior Jordan Huff posted NCAA `B’ qualifying times in the 200 free “B” final. Ernstsson won the “B” final, finishing ninth overall with a time (1:36.04) that ranks fifth in the Iowa record books. Huff swam to the wall in 1:36.29 to finish 11th.
The quartet of sophomore Brian Donatelli, Huff, Ernstsson, and Betulius swam to the wall in 1:19.82 to finish eighth in the 200-free relay final. The squad’s time ranks ninth overall in Iowa history.
Iowa sits in sixth place with 190 points after three days of the championships. Michigan leads the team race with 601 points, while Indiana and Ohio State sit in second (464) and third (335), respectively.
The championships resume with preliminaries Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m. (CT) followed by finals at 6:30 p.m.
