LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — University of Iowa head baseball coach Jack Dahm won his 500th career game as a collegiate head coach Saturday in the Hawkeyes’ 7-3 victory over Western Illinois at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock, Ark.

Dahm, who is in his 20th season as a head coach, won his 217th game at Iowa (10 seasons), ranking third in program history behind Duane Banks (810 wins) and Otto Vogel (440 wins). Dahm won 283 games at Creighton from 1994-2003.

The Hawkeyes (4-4) led the entire game, taking advantage of two WIU errors in the bottom of the first inning to put three runs on the board. A two-out single by sophomore Jake Mangler drove in classmate Jake Yacinich and forced a Western Illinois throwing error that plated classmate Taylor Kaufman. Mangler scored a batter later, crossing the plate after a Leatherneck fielding error.

Western Illinois (2-6) answered with two runs in the top of the second via Neil DeCook and Brent Turner RBI singles.

Sophomore Kris Goodman increased Iowa’s advantage to 4-2 in the fourth inning, grounding into a fielder’s choice that allowed sophomore Anthony Torres to score.

Goodman registered his only hit of the game in the sixth inning, extending his career-best hit streak to eight games. Goodman’s single to right field scored sophomore Nick Day. Goodman would later score after Yacinich singled through the left side, giving the Hawkeyes a 6-2 lead.

The Leathernecks closed the gap to 6-3 in the top half of the sixth, as Turner scored while Dan Dispensa was caught in a pickle.

Iowa added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Yacinich singled up the middle, driving in freshman Blake Hickman. Yacinich finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate, recording his team-best fourth multi-hit game of the season.

Matt Dermody picked up the second win of his senior season. The Norwalk, Iowa, native tossed seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three. Sophomore Nick Hibbing entered the game in the eighth inning. Hibbing pitched two scoreless frames, striking out three, en route to his first save.

The Hawkeyes play again today, facing Arkansas-Little Rock at 3 p.m. (CT) at Gary Hogan Field. Iowa fell to UALR on Friday, 5-2.
