AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Iowa women’s rowing team took on Southern Methodist and host-school Texas on Saturday at the Longhorn Invitational. In addition, the Hawkeye Novice 8 boat faced Kansas State. Competition was held on Lady Bird Lake in Austin.
The Iowa Novice 8 boat came in second against Kansas State to start the morning competition. Kansas State finished in 6:47.4 while Iowa finished with a time of 7:15.2.
The Hawkeyes began competition against Southern Methodist in the Varsity 4, with Iowa claiming a win in 7:53.9. SMU crossed the line in 8:59.4.
Iowa swept the next two races against SMU, claiming wins in the second Varsity 8 and the Varsity 8. Iowa’s 2V8 finished in 6:53.4 and the V8 brought home a time of 6:48.4.
Iowa and Texas competed in five races during the afternoon session. The Longhorns took the Novice 8 race, with Iowa finishing second in 7:27.4.
The Longhorns managed wins in the 2V4 (7:51.9) and the V4 (7:42.9). Iowa recorded times of 8:12.0 and 7:55.1, respectively.
Competition concluded with the 2V8 and the V8, with Texas taking first in both events. Iowa came in second in the 2V8 with a time of 7:08.9 and the V8 in 6:58.4.
“Each race gave us an opportunity to learn and develop,” head coach Steve Pritzker said. “Our results show that we still have some work to do to compete on the national level.”
The Hawkeyes will face San Diego on Sunday in Austin.
