IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team posted a pair of dual victories, downing Michigan State, 182-117, and Northern Iowa (238-61) on Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.

The two victories move the Hawkeyes’ record to 2-1 this season.

“We’re not satisfied with this performance, but it’s great to get the win,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “Michigan State is a good team, and they’re well-coached. They race hard, so it’s good to get this win.”

The Hawkeyes got the evening started off on the right note, taking the top two spots in the 200-medley relay. Maddie Bro, Karolina Wartalowicz, Emma Sougstad, and Olivia Kabacinski touched out in 1:45.46 to take the top time, while the team of Allie Orivs, Hannah Maher, Haley Gordon, and Elise Borja came in second with a time of 1:47.07.

Iowa backed that up with another strong performance in the 100-back, sweeping the top three times. Bro (58.28) and Orvis (59.01) came in first and second, while junior Audrey Kumm was third in 59.51.

In the 200-breast, the Hawkeyes finished first and third. Senior Karolina Wartalowicz took the top time (2:21.06), while sophomore Colleen Champa was third in 2:23.51.

Kabacinski led the way individually for the Hawkeyes with four first-place finishes. After placing first as a part of the 200-medley relay, Kabacinski contributed a first place finish in the 50-free (24.04), 100-free (51.91) and was the lead leg of the 400-free relay (3:31.75).

Freshman Emma Sougstad continued to contribute for the Hawkeyes, scoring two first, one second, and one third place finish. Sougstad was a member of both the winning 200-medley relay and 400-free relays, placed second in the 50-free (24.10), and took home third in the 100-butterfly (57.56).

In all, the Hawkeyes posted the top times in nine swimming events.

In the diving well, Iowa finished first and second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. On the 1-meter, redshirt junior Joelle Christy led the way with a 303.20, while Abby Grilli was in second with a score of 287.20. Grilli also won the 3-meter with a final score of 288.10, while Christy was runner-up with a 287.65.

Iowa returns to action Nov. 1, hosting Minnesota at the CRWC Pool beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).
