IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team posted a team runner-up showing in the three-day Hawkeye Invitational, finishing with 977.5 points.
“I’m really proud of them and how they raced. There were so many good races and so many good performances this weekend,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We have set ourselves up well for the second half of the season, but I really thought this was a great meet with some great competition.”
The Hawkeyes were second to Notre Dame (1,228.5 points), while Denver (669) and Milwaukee (248) were third and fourth. Iowa had a strong final day of competition, and it all started in the prelims.
During Sunday morning’s preliminaries, seven different Hawkeyes posted NCAA `B’ cut times, while two individuals recorded times that placed in the top-10 in school history, and one diver set a school record.
Junior Chris Freeman posted the seventh-fastest time in the 200-back when he touched out in 1:46.27. Sophomore Quillan Oak finished in 1:58.73 in the 200-breast to rank fifth all-time, and in the diving well, sophomore Addison Boschult broke the school record in the platform with a prelim score of 362.45.
During the finals, the Hawkeyes posted three NCAA `B’ cut times, while also winning two events.
In the 100-free, Iowa dominated the “A” final, posting a 1-2-3-4-7 finish. Sophomore David Ernstsson (44.72) won the event and was joined by senior Gianni Sesto (44.84), freshman Jackson Halsmer (45.24), sophomore Jackson Allen (45.30), and freshman Josh Gill (45.66).
The 200-back event was another strong event for the Hawkeyes, as three athletes swam to `B’ times. Senior Dustin Rhoads (1:43.98), junior Grant Betulius (1:45.43), and sophomore Andrew Parker (1:46.20) all posted `B’ cut times while finishing second, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Freeman added to the scoring effort, placing seventh in 1:46.94.
Sophomore Roman Trussov recorded the second Hawkeye victory, taking the 200-breast in 1:57.37. The time, an NCAA `B’ cut, bested the `B’ cut time Trussov posted during the prelim session Sunday morning. Oak took third in the event, touching out in 1:58.87, a `B’ cut time, and seniors Andrew Marciniak (2:02.80) and Kyle Noser (2:03.58) finished seventh and eighth in the event.
Iowa ended the three-day invite in strong fashion, finishing second in the 400-free relay when Sesto, Betulius, Halsmer and Ernstsson touched the wall in 2:57.20.
In the diving well, Boschult used a first place finish in the prelims of the platform competition to propel himself to capture the title during the finals. Boschult bested the school-record a second time, finishing with a total of 373.85 points.
Iowa now heads into winter training before hosting Missouri and Indiana in a pair of dual meets Jan. 18 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
